I have always
supported initiatives related to encouraging the love of reading in children.
Reading paves the
way to improving a child’s potential and development with enriched knowledge, experience and a solid foundation for school, life and business and ultimately benefits
the greater South African economy.
I was then disappointed and shocked to see that mine was the only book donated and placed
in the trolley at the Hyde Park shopping
centre, Pick n Pay on Wednesday 11 July.
I had carefully selected a book to donate to the cause from a large
range of well priced children’s books at Exclusive Books. I think most children (and people for that
matter) love animals. So I was instantly
won over by a book about Kaspar a black cat who survived the sinking of the
Titantic and related his journey through life.
It had appeal based on the cover and the adventure contained in the
pages that followed – a tale about Kaspar, Prince of Cats. The Lonehill Pick n Pay was marginally better
with about six books in their trolley.
It would be
fantastic if people could support this initiative – it is one that is very
important for us all. Donate a book and many children will benefit by loving
books, forming the habit of reading and will stand a better chance in life!
A Fourways Review
Article – ‘Books for Tata’ reads:
“Pick n Pay and the
Nelson Mandela Foundation have joined forces to help answer Nelson Mandela’s
call to action and inspire change. From
1 to 17 July, Pick n Pay Hypermarkets and stores will have collection points for
the public to drop off books for the Mandela Day Book Drive, which will be
handed over to the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory on 18 July.
The books will be
donated to the Nelson Mandela Foundation’s 94+ school project, an initiative
that supports Mandela’s 94th birthday and legacy by giving hope and
dignity to disadvantaged pupils, and the container libraries project that
promotes a reading culture”.
Please support this
worthy cause and drop off a book at any Pick n Pay Hypermarket or store
nationwide!
