Over the past few days, months and for many years an outpouring of love and appreciation for Nelson Mandela from the South African ‘rainbow nation’ and the world has been witnessed – today in particular this is more evident than ever as Madiba, South Africa’s icon turns 94 years old.
Many of us have embraced
Nelson Mandela’s example of making a difference and want to follow in his
footsteps, to share the responsibility of assisting our communities and to
continue giving hope to people in their daily existence. Many have rallied to the cause to make a
difference and aim to continue making a difference.
Today – 18th
July 2012 is not only a celebration of Nelson Mandela, one of the world’s
greatest humanitarian’s 94th birthday but of South Africans and
their shared allegiance to a shared goal to make a difference in other people’s
lives. Madiba is an icon who has through
his words given shelter to many South African’s from the storm of life, courage
to continue and a belief in self and self worth to rise to great heights. And,
as per the publication ‘This is Africa ’ –
Forbes Africa – July 2012 edition quoting Nelson Mandela:
“Education
is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world”
We can all be proud
to be South Africans, sharing a common bond and unity, sharing in giving to
those less fortunate than ourselves. There has been an outpouring of giving and
hope – you have to love South
Africa and South Africans! It is everyone’s
celebration today! Thank you Madiba.
A towering sculpture
of South Africa ’s
and the world’s favourite icon holds court over Nelson Mandela Square . One of the largest
open public spaces in the country, the centre adjoins the renowned Sandton City complex. This European styled
piazza commemorates heritage and celebrates international style with the warmth
of African hospitality. The centre’s 10th anniversary coincided with
South Africa ’s
first decade of democracy in 2004 and to commemorate this democratic heritage,
a decision was taken to rename the square from Sandton Square to Nelson Mandela Square in honour of the
world’s best loved political leader and humanitarian, former President Nelson
Mandela.
To celebrate the
renaming, a specially donated six metre tall bronze statue of Nelson Mandela
was donated by anonymous international donors and constructed using a computer
graphic technique. Local sculptors Jacob Maponyane and Kobus Hattingh made this
concept a reality. The Nelson
Mandela Square is visited on average by over one
million local and international patrons a month, the physical square 1,000m sq
serves as a stage for a host of discerning local and international events
including concerts, fashion shows, exhibitions, sporting events and production
launches. It is also a regular film location and popular backdrop used by
advertising agencies and production companies.
