Thrupps & the Post Office Centre, Illovo

Where Food is An Art

It was reported in the Financial Mail, 22 June 2012 edition in their ‘Art of Investment’ article that two specialist markets, top-end property and fine arts, have emerged as particularly recession resilient.  As you contemplate the top ten in both lists below consider spoiling yourself to tea or lunch at top-end grocers and food with flair outlets. Don’t be put off by the ordinary appearance of the centres which are without excessive glitz and bling.  The trade off is one where service and the very best food is the benchmark. Look no further for these qualities than at the Illovo Post Office Centre and Thrupps Grocers of distinction!

Thrupps – Grocers of Distinction

I have shopped at Thrupps since 1994.  I lived down the road for seven years and found it very convenient to get my weekly shop at Thrupps.  I now live further away and don’t get there as often as I would like to.  Except when I am making lasagne for family and friends and then I make a special trip to buy low fat topside mince and top up with other must have favourites.  I have also had a post box at the Northlands post office since 1994, situated at the Illovo Post Office Centre which is home to the well known Italian food restaurant Assaggi as well as the tea and lunch venue The Patisserie.

Post Office Centre, Illovo - Restaurants

Assaggi  has developed a large and loyal community of business people and residents who regularly come back again and again to enjoy traditional Italian food made to perfection.  It is the perfect business lunch meeting place. The Patisserie is a draw card of note with it being packed most days.  Whether you are having a breakfast, brunch or light lunch their food and confectionary will satisfy your palate.  Two new additions to the centre are Illovo Fruit & Flower as well as The Fish Shop.  There is also a new restaurant, bakery come deli which is located on the ground level, lower floor which was once occupied by a gym / health centre.  All come highly recommended for down to earth good food with individual flair and style.
