Southdowns Shopping Centre – Irene, Centurion

Not your average shopping centre or mall – it’s a little bit country – AND VERY nicely so!

With shopping malls popping up on every corner of Gauteng, it is really nice to have a shopping experience that is slightly different to all the rest – which consist of escalators, elevators and queues – and more of the same, same, same!  A country themed shopping centre – Southdowns has a country feel and is relaxed but also has some of your favourite brand shopping experiences such as Woolworths, Clicks, Pick n Pay, family favourites - Spur, KFC, Doppio Zero and the Fish Market plus a number of no name brand outlets, other individual boutiques and shops that have their own unique flair and style of shopping experience.

This small to medium sized shopping centre just around the corner from the Irene Dairy Farm deserves additional patronage and I can only think that because it is a little out of the way that it does not get the feet through the doors that it would like to have.

Most people are familiar with the Doppio Zero Bakery restaurant concept. If I am not mistaken the first one originated in Greenside, Johannesburg.  It serves a range of Mediterranean-style food that will please most palates. The name (double zero) refers to the 00 fl traditionally used to make pasta, and here you can choose between pastas such as spaghetti con calamari, fettuccine con pollo or gnocchi with a choice of sauces. More substantial main courses, salads and light meals are also available. Further attractions are the deck, which makes a lovely spot to enjoy breakfast, and the bakery, with tempting treats in the form of artisan breads, croissants and pastries to take home. It also has a well chosen wine list.  I must go back to try out their croissants!

Barn52 (Eat, Drink, Lounge) at Southdowns is an alternatively decorated trendy restaurant with an eclectic mix of contemporary industrial and old world charm décor with splashes of red. The cuisine is a mix of Italian, American, Chinese and Brazilian making at a truly international experience. This is the perfect venue to enjoy a unique cocktail on the terrace while enjoying the expansive views.  One can enjoy a relaxing meal. They make great pizzas as well as a full range of other foods.

Feel like some country feel shopping – get out and down to Southdowns just around the corner from the Irene Dairy Farm!
