When last did you take a stroll through the Johannesburg Zoo?
On
a beautiful winter’s day, in the glorious winter sunshine this is a treat. The large grounds of the Johannesburg Zoo are
well maintained and the animals look well fed and content. It is school
holidays for many so don’t miss this opportunity to take a picnic and spend a
morning or afternoon enjoying the zoo and its surroundings. The zoo has a full holiday programme of
supervised activity for 7 – 13 year olds (no parents allowed) and a programme
for under 7 year olds where parents are welcome.
Meet Phila the rescued Black
Rhino
Phila
a black five year old rhino cow was shot by poachers. She comes from Modimolle, where she was bred
to help establish a viable herd of the critically endangered Black Rhino.
She
was shot twice in the wild and seven times more after being moved to a “secure”
boma – all for the small stub of a horn that was left after she was dehorned in
an attempt to save her from becoming a poacher’s target. She was then moved to another secret
location, but helicopters were seen on two occasions flying low overhead. Phila’s injuries were severe but, fortunately
they were not life threatening. She has
had medical treatment at the Johannesburg Zoo and has recovered in the sanctuary
of the Zoo!
