The number of rhinos poached this month could hit a new high despite the best efforts of authorities, MPs heard on Tuesday http://mg.co.za/article/2012-11-13-rhino-poaching-could-reach-new-high
We are losing the war against poaching
The passion for the
country’s natural environment motivated the
South African Breweries (SAB) and Mark Boucher, a well-known international
cricket player, to join forces and to single-mindedly focus on the DNA
database as one of the key pillars required for a sustainable solution to rhino
poaching.
As of 10 November 2012 – the horrific
sum of 530 rhino have been killed this year and 448 killed last year
Rhinoceros
are killed by humans for their horns, which are bought and sold on the black
market, and which are used by some cultures for ornamental or
(pseudo-scientific) medicinal purposes. The
horns are actually made of keratin, the same type of protein that
makes up hair and fingernails. A Thai
national who was found guilty of organizing bogus trophy hunts to sell rhino
horns on the international black market was sentenced to 40 years in South
African jail on Friday. National Prosecuting Authority spokeswoman Phindi Louw
welcomed the ruling. She said “We believe it’s an appropriate sentence that
will send a message that as a country we will never tolerate people who come in
our country, unlawfully with the purpose of destroying our wildlife” news.howzit.msn.com/article.aspx?cp-documentid=251972936
