Bread
The humble sandwich
and loaf of bread has come a long way since my school days – the loaf now has
an upgraded image and restaurant themes have at long last espoused a bread
theme into a trendy and popular restaurant franchise. That of Vovo
telo!
One of the first Johannesburg Vovo telos is situated at 44 Stanley Avenue, Milpark. As per their website, 44 Stanley is Joburg's best
kept secret. And that it is, as I had a
great deal of trouble in finding the centre without looking at their map on their website. I had heard of 44 Stanley a few years ago
and had always wanted to make the effort to drive across town from the northern suburbs to see what
everyone was talking about. I have always been a food and wine enthusiast having been a partner in a pizzeria in my youth and I appreciate the art of delivery of a "wow experience" in any restaurant or food establishment.
Once I found my way to 44 Stanley, with winter approaching, I discovered
that some of the shops do not seem to get much light or sunlight and on a Monday the centre
is not well supported at all. In fact, the busiest and
most popular venue was Vovo telo.
Perhaps the weekend trade surpasses that of Monday's trade and the arrival of winter has put everyone in wraps or they prefer
frequenting the huge malls and shopping centres that seem to pop up with no end
in sight as if there is unlimited capacity and spend, to support them all.
I had previously heard about the
latest restaurant theme – ' Bread' and Vovo telo – a bakery and café. I think the first one in Johannesburg opened at 44 Stanley Avenue . I didn’t ever get there as one opened up in
Parkhurst and I ended up having a few great cappuccinos there. Then a Vovo telo opened up in Lonehill around
the corner from where I live, so I also had great cappuccinos there. It sounds as if I am a cuppaccino addict. Yes, I am guilty! The menu calls them a ‘flat white’ and this
is a very enjoyable cappuccino. They are
consistently good at all Vovo telos and are probably rated in my top four,
great cappuccino experiences at the moment.
Vovo telo Bakery & Café, 44 Stanley, Milpark (Tel: 011 482-4139) has a great vibe and the Gourmet Sarmie and Flat White are extremely
good as is the service. If you like an arty
and creative vibe, pay them and the centre a visit. Both the Parkhurst and Lonehill Vovo telo
Bakeries & Cafes are well supported, popular and well worth a visit, even if only for the coffee. If you are into rustic
breads and pizzas - this is your place; if you like great salads – try them out.
I am quite sure that Vovo telos and 44 Stanley
are on the list of hot spots when the heat is on and summer sun shine is in
full force……… View pics
